The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is a modified reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. Signed into law on December 10, 2015, it replaces the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 and provides federal guidelines for states regarding various topics in education. This research brief offers an overview of the legislation, as well as its proposed timeline for implementation and implications for schools in the state of Virginia.
